About bugs & birds coloring pages

Butterflies, ladybugs, bees, caterpillars, owls, robins and cardinals all belong in this section. Bugs and birds are small in real life, but on a coloring page they become big and full of detail, with wings, feathers, shells and antennae to fill in. Easy pages show one creature with thick lines, while trickier pages add flowers, leaves and branches around it.

Butterfly wings are a great way to teach symmetry. Color one wing, then try to copy the same colors on the other side so they match. Birds are good for practicing patterns: short pencil strokes look like feathers, and a darker shade under the wing gives a simple shadow. Take the pages outside if you can. Spot a real bird or insect in the backyard or at the park, then come back and color one that looks similar. Children can also pick up a few easy facts along the way, such as insects having six legs, or monarch butterflies flying all the way to Mexico for the winter.

Questions parents and teachers ask

How many legs do insects have?

All insects have six legs and a body in three parts: the head, the thorax and the abdomen. Butterflies, bees and ladybugs are insects. Spiders have eight legs and snails have none, so they are not insects. Counting legs on the page is an easy science game.

How do I explain symmetry with a butterfly page?

Fold a sheet of paper down the middle and show that both halves match. A butterfly's wings work the same way. Ask your child to color one wing, then copy the exact colors and patterns onto the other wing.

Which birds can we spot in our backyard?

Common backyard birds in much of the United States include the American robin, northern cardinal, blue jay, mourning dove, chickadee and house finch. The bald eagle is the national bird. Spotting a bird outside and then coloring it at home makes the page more meaningful.
